When I was in engineering school, all aspiring engineers had to take an advanced math class called differential equations. Solving differential equations is necessary for all types of engineering applications: aeronautics, communication systems and satellites, analysis of electronic circuits . . . the list goes on and on.
But solving differential equations can also be notoriously difficult—especially in the pre-computer era when I was learning. But there was an amazing technique that we all learned. This mathematical trick made solving differential equations as easy as solving a freshman algebra equation.
The technique that we used was called the Laplace transform. The Laplace transform is named after mathematician and astronomer Pierre-Simon, marquis de Laplace.
And it is ingenious.
I won’t go into the mathematical details—largely because I don’t remember them! But I will tell you what struck me at the time, and what has stayed with me all these years. The Laplace transform seems analogous to the relationship between consciousness and space-time.
Let me explain.
A Laplace transform takes a complex and multifaceted differential equation and transforms it to a different mathematical domain—analogous to projecting the equation into a different dimension. Stated in math-speak, Laplace transforms the differential equation from the time domain, and projects it into the frequency domain. And when the equation is viewed in the frequency domain, it becomes a snap to solve it. Then all you have to do is transform it back into the time domain and voila the equation is solved!
If you’ve made it this far, congratulations! But you may be asking, “What does this have to do with spirituality or consciousness?” I would submit to you that it may be the key to expanding our model of reality.
I would posit that what we call space-time—our normal everyday reality—is analogous to the time domain in the Laplace discussion. Remember, it is in the time domain that the differential equation can be very difficult to solve. I would also propose that consciousness is analogous to the frequency domain as explained above. In the frequency domain, solving the equation becomes easy.
In the world of Laplace, complex problems are solved in the frequency domain, and then the solutions are projected back into the time domain.
I believe that this same thing is true with consciousness and space-time. I believe that space-time actually derives from consciousness. That is, consciousness is primary, and that space-time is a projection of consciousness. I believe that what is happening mathematically with a Laplace transform is happening all the time to create our reality.
This idea is similar to the ideas of the famous physicist David Bohm. In Bohm’s view, there is an implicate order (a hidden dimension of creation and connectedness) which creates the explicate order (our world of form and space and time). Bohm would say that the explicate order is a projection from the implicate order. (For those that are interested, I have written other articles about Bohm within this Substack.)
For the world’s spiritual teachers and mystics, this is nothing new. They have always proclaimed that your inner consciousness creates your outer reality. Or stated a little more precisely, what is formed in your consciousness, will be projected into your outer reality.
Your consciousness is your very being-ness. It is your essence. It is your soul. This being-ness is continually creating your reality. Your being-ness is the determining factor for the things and people you are attracting to your life. It is more important than anything you say or do.
How can you change your consciousness, your being-ness? By your free will and intention. In order to change your consciousness, you must feel it. You must resonate with it. You must be it.
This is best done during meditation and prayer. When you meditate or pray, you can use “I AM” statements to change your consciousness. I AM loving. I AM compassionate. I AM consciously connected to the Universe. Feel these as if they were already true—because they are! The trick is for you to consciously feel these things. The Universe will gladly mirror these feelings back to you.
When you change your consciousness, you change your world.
What will you change today?
Always let your light shine!
