Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, they will pour into your lap. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return. —Luke 6:38
Sometimes when I mention the concept of karma, people say, “Isn’t that just some New Age concept?” Or another common comment is, “That’s just an Eastern philosophy.” I would contend, however, that most of our spiritual teachers have taught about karma—and Jesus is no exception.
Now you won’t find the word “karma” in the New Testament. What you will find is Jesus telling his disciples about how karma works and how it can be used to their advantage.
Karma is simply the realization that what you give, you ultimately receive. The Universe ensures this is so. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Judge not and you won’t be judged. This is all for your soul’s benefit. Karma is the Universe’s compassionate system for developing souls.
Karma works in both your inner world and in your outer world. In your inner world, if you give forgiveness, you will be forgiven. Or stated perhaps a little more precisely, when you forgive, your mental landscape becomes uncluttered, allowing you to make a conscious connection to the Universe.
Karma works in the outer world too. If you give money, you will likely receive some type of material return. And the Universe will plan this return for the perfect time. And remember, even in the outer world, what you give can take many forms: money, service, time, etc.
I like to think about karma as an energy system that is in equilibrium. When you give high energy (in whatever form), you will receive high energy (in many possible forms). In this sense, karma is something completely natural and automatic. It has parallels in science. If you create a vacuum, Nature will rush to fill this vacuum. Karma is analogous. When you give your energy, the Universe will refill this void.
Let’s take a closer look at the quote from Jesus above. Give and it will be given to you. But notice what else Jesus says. He says, by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return. So, if your giving is coming from a place of compassion and high energy, then the return of that giving will be of that very same quality. In other words, it matters what your “being-ness” is when you give. Are you giving begrudgingly because you must? Or are you giving because you are inspired and happy to do so?
Near death experiencers (NDErs) report that during their life reviews, they get to re-experience all the important events of their life. What is even more astounding is that many report that they also experience those events from the perspective of the other person. Were you mean to your son? You get to experience how that made your son feel. Did you help someone in distress? You get to experience how great you made that person feel. This is for your soul’s benefit! There is no punishment here. Your soul will take the lessons of karma and use them to plan out its next lifetime. This is reported in the NDE research, and also in hypnotic regressions to the time between lives (the work of Dr. Michael Newton). Karma is the Universe’s compassionate system for your soul to learn and grow from life to life.
You are a beautiful soul making your way from life to life. You are a spiritual warrior. Source has created a fantastic system and structure for your soul to continually expand itself. Karma is built into the fabric of our Universe. And you can use this knowledge to your benefit.
So, the next time you are faced with a challenge, why not give compassion? Can you spread joy to others? Can you be of service to others? Can you lend a hand?
The Universe will return your gifts to you in so many ways, and your soul will smile.
Always let your light shine!
