Different Brain Wave States
A direct line of communication to the Universe?
When I was fourteen years old, I experienced something odd—something very unusual. It was so unexpected that the experience has stayed with me all these years. The experience actually changed my worldview, although I didn’t realize it at the time. It was more like a tiny seed that was planted in the back of my mind—but it didn’t sprout and blossom until years later.
What happened to me at the age of fourteen cannot be explained by the scientific materialist paradigm. In that worldview, the paranormal cannot and does not exist. The traditional scientific model of reality simply won’t allow it. There actually is plenty of valid scientific data that does prove the existence of the extraordinary. But that is a topic for another day.
So, what happened to me when I was fourteen? I participated in a four-week meditation class with my mom. At the conclusion of the class, I experienced first-hand a paranormal event. It is the one time in my life that I can honestly say I had a psychic experience. And it was profound.
The class was designed to teach the student to cultivate a sustained “alpha state” within your mind. You can think of alpha as a state of conscious relaxation—a condition of relaxed awareness. All of us enter into alpha at different points during the day: when you first wake up, while daydreaming, or even while watching television. It’s a state where your mind calms down, yet you are still very much conscious and aware.
There are actually multiple brain wave states. These brain wave states are electrical patterns across the brain’s cortex. They can even be measured with an electroencephalograph (EEG). We can experience all of these brain states quite naturally throughout the course of the day (and night). Here they are in order of decreasing brainwave frequency:
1. Gamma – This state is linked to the “super conscious” state—a feeling of euphoria and connectedness, an expanded consciousness. The mind must be very quiet to achieve the gamma state.
2. Beta – Normal waking consciousness. Conscious thought and logical thinking.
3. Alpha – Relaxed awareness. Alpha begins to bridge the gap between our conscious minds and other states of awareness. Some meditation practices create an alpha state.
4. Theta – Deep relaxation, verging on sleep; however, still aware and conscious. Theta allows an even deeper state of connection to other states of awareness. Some meditation practices cultivate a theta state.
5. Delta – A deep level of relaxation associated with restorative sleep.
The class I took offered to train the student to consciously access the alpha state whenever desired. While “in alpha”, a student could manifest a variety of extraordinary skills. I won’t go into all of the claims; however, the one claim I can testify to is that of enhanced intuition or even spontaneous knowledge. A parapsychologist would call this telepathy. And as fantastic as this sounds, that is exactly what I experienced. I somehow gained access to detailed information that I did not obtain via conventional means.
During the final day of the class, we were asked to pair off with a partner, someone who we did not know. Each participant was to bring three different medical cases—people known to you but not to your partner. I brought three cases of family members who were suffering from various medical issues. My partner did the same.
The instructions for the exercise were simple. My partner was only to give the first name of a given case. I would then “go to alpha” to conduct a reading, a medical review, of the case in question. While I was in the alpha state, I was to describe anything that came to mind with the case. My partner was to not give any indication as to whether what I was saying was valid or not. My partner had strict instructions to just say, “Okay” to acknowledge that he had heard me. Additionally, my partner was to take notes of whatever came out of my mouth describing the case.
While I was in alpha, I saw a little girl. It was a little girl who was crying. She was maybe 11 or 12 years old. There were other people present in my vision as well. There was a circle of children surrounding the little girl, and they were all laughing and pointing at the crying girl. They were making fun of her.
My attention was drawn to the little girl’s right cheek. There was a dark spot there and the girl was trying to cover up the spot with her hand. Whatever was on her cheek was the source for her problems.
I described my vision to my partner. To be honest, as I was describing the whole scene, it felt like I was making it all up. But the instructions were to go with whatever you see and try not to filter or interpret while in the alpha state. As quickly as it had begun, the vision was over. I awakened from alpha and returned to waking consciousness. It was time to debrief with my partner.
The little girl was my partner’s daughter. When she was very young, she had been attacked by a dog which led to a noticeable scar on her right cheek. The event had lasting repercussions for the girl, as her classmates were now making fun of her at school. It was an ongoing event for my partner and his daughter. My partner and I were both amazed at the accuracy of my descriptions. I had somehow gained access to this knowledge in a way that is not well understood by conventional science.
I believe that accessing different brain wave states is a key to opening up a line of communication with the Universe. Meditation and prayer are designed to cultivate different brain wave states, although this may or may not be acknowledged. But it’s why I often say that, “Meditation is a key to the Kingdom of Heaven within.” Or stated a little differently, consciously connecting to the Universe will bring many surprising and important benefits to the meditator.
It seems that master meditators are able to access deeper and deeper levels of consciousness. A beginning meditator might experience periods of alpha intermittently. A more experienced meditator might be mainly meditating in the theta state. The deeper one goes, the more your thoughts subside, and you are left with only a peaceful awareness. And sometimes this state creates spontaneous feelings of joy and compassion. You reach the Kingdom of Heaven within.
I believe that accessing these different states of consciousness allows you to contact a dimension of creation and connectedness. This dimension is primary. It is causal. This dimension is an infinite field of intelligent consciousness. It is a field in which we live and move and have our being. In a very real sense this dimension is the creator of our outer reality. When you make conscious contact with this field, miraculous things can happen. Your inner consciousness always determines your outer reality, but when you make contact with this field, this can be greatly accelerated.
So, what brain wave state will you cultivate today? What messages will you send to the Universe? What messages will you receive from the Universe? Your meditation practice will open many doors for you. Your meditation practice is a key to the Kingdom of Heaven within. What a wonderful key to have! Open the door to the Kingdom and see what’s inside. You will be glad that you did.
And always let your light shine!
Sean
